Time to put gas in the Buick and hit the road
by Scott Sorum
It's going to be a busy weekend for local sports fans.
You are going to find a little bit of everything on the calendar.
And with the Minnesota Vikings on a bye weekend, it couldn't have come at a better time.
On Friday the North Dakota State College of Science volleyball team hosts the District tournament at the Blikre Activities Center.
Coach Jane Passa's team will be playing for the right to go to the national tournament against North Platte Community College.
Win or lose the Wildcats play Saturday morning in the double-elimination match up.
They will play a third game later Saturday if needed.
Also on Saturday, the Wildcats' football team travels to Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, Iowa for a playoff game with the Panthers.
The two football teams met earlier this year, with Ellsworth winning 10-7 in heavy rain.
Let's hope the weather is a little drier this time around.
Regardless of the outcome, the Wildcats will be playing in the Graphic Edge Bowl Nov. 22.
We also have a road trip to Fargo on the docket for Wahpeton Huskies football at 5 p.m.
The Huskies are unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in North Dakota class AA.
They face the Devils Lake Firebirds at the Fargodome in the state semi-finals.
That game is a Wahpeton home game, but with all the rain we had here recently, it had to be moved to the Fargodome.
I'm sure the Huskies' fans will make the dome look and sound a lot like a traditional home game.
When all of you come home from the football game in Fargo, make sure you head back to the Blikre Activities Center for the first round of the Circle of Nations Basketball Classic.
It'll be your first opportunity to see the Wildcats men's and women's basketball teams as they host the first tournament of the year.
Take the opportunity to see what the Wildcats men's and women's teams have in the way of quality basketball players this year.
And Wildcats men's coach Scott Schumacher said a special thank you to the Circle of Nations school for sponsoring this event.
The tournament starts earlier Saturday with preliminary games at Wahpeton High School because of the Wildcats volleyball tournament, but the Wildcats teams take the court at the Blikre Activities Center at 6 p.m. for the women and 8 p.m. for the men.
The Circle of Nations Classic continues on Sunday too, so you'll have plenty of chances to see great basketball this weekend.
On Sunday, the Wildcats' women take the court at 2 p.m. and the men play at 4 p.m.
The Vikings have Sunday off so spend the weekend watching your local teams compete.
