Groups nationwide are kicking off the largest fundraising event to fight cancer, Relay for Life, which is a chance for communities to celebrate survivors and loved ones lost.

It's also an event to fight for a cure for cancer and organizers for the Richland-Wilkin Relay For Life are striving to raise $65,000 by registering more teams than ever for the May 1, 2010, 12-hour event.

They'll start registering teams Thursday, Nov. 12 at a 5:30 chili supper at the Wahpeton Eagles Club.

Wayne Steiner, local Relay For Life chair, said while invites are sent to many of the community's cancer survivors, the kick-off event is also open to anyone who wants to learn more about the fight against cancer.

"For some people [it's] a support group and a way to get out and celebrate life, all that it really has to offer," Steiner said. "It's a great way to meet people and to form lasting friendships."

Similar to 2008, Relay For Life team recruiters hope to attract more youth, as it may encourage them to keep active in the organization as adults. Pam Knapper, Richland-Wilkin's team development chair, said Web participation is also a key in getting more individuals to form teams.

"We're going to promote online again. It really increased last year, it can only get better this year," Knapper said.

Community members interested in joining the area's Relay For Life campaign can log on to www.relayforlife.org/wahpetonbreckenridgemn or call Knapper at 701-640-6282 or Holly Voss, team development co-chair, at 701-899-3120.
