Megan Groen, who led the Lady Wildcats with 26 points, scored early in the game.

Karis Phillips also added two of her 14 points early in the game.

Leading 9-7, the Lady Wildcats went on a 19-0 run on their way to a 47-21 half time lead.

The Lady Wildcats got points from Haley Hoyer, Hannah Wennas, Ashley Holmstrom and Candra Soderman.

“Even though both teams played us in a zone, I was impressed by how many points we scored against the zone,” Lady Wildcats coach Paulette Stein said.

In the second half, the Wildcats outscored Turtle Mountain 48-40.

The Lady Mikinocks stayed close in the second half primarily on the effort of Erin Lambert.

Lambert hit five three-point baskets and led Turtle Mountain with 25 points.

But the Lady Wildcats' lead at the half was enough to sustain them for the win.

"I thought we were sound densively in our man to man," Stein said. "We fixed a few things after the first game. For our freshmen it was a great confidence builder going into the Mon-Dak tournament."

In the mens game, the Wildcats jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead after Hanif Nixon-Hughes and Jamie Mauch contributed points.

Turtle Mountain got back to within an 8-5 deficit before the Wildcats went on a 27-0 run.

The Wildcats defense limited Turtle Mountain to less than 10 percent shooting from the floor in the first half and got offensive contributions from Demetrius Smith, Patrick Gibson, Aaron Morris and Terry Bembry before going into the break with a 42-10 lead.

In the second half, the Wildcats got an opportunity to play their reserves and saw a nine point output by Bryan Jacklitch in the final 20 minutes.

Jacklitch hit 4 of 4 from the floor and 1 of 1 from beyond the three-point line.

Morris and Nixon-Hughes each had 12 points for the game to lead the Wildcats in the winning effort.

"One of the things we emphasized in the Sunday game was our man to man and zone defense," Wildcats head coach Scott Schumacher said. "And I thought we did a better job of that against Turtle Mountain than we did in the first game on Saturday."

The Wildcats mens and womens teams head to Williston for the Mon-Dak Conference tournaments which starts Thursday.

The mens team takes on United Tribes Technical College Thursday at 4 p.m.

The Lady Wildcats open the tournament against Bismarck State College at 1 p.m.
