Huskies claim consolation title at sophomore tourney

On Saturday, Nov. 7, the Wahpeton Huskies sophomore volleyball team participated in the EDC tournament.

The first match of the day put the No. 8 seeded Huskies against No. 9 Grand Forks Central.

The Huskies won 26-24 and 25-15.

Their second match had the Huskies taking on the No. 1 seed, Fargo-Shanley.

The Huskies played great volleyball, coach Allison Stuart said, but fell to the Deacons, 25-16 and 25-10.

In the consolation round, Wahpeton took on the No. 4 seed in the tournament, Fargo Davies.

The Huskies played some of their best volleyball of the season, beating Davies 25-19 and 25-23 to advance to the consolation championship.

The Huskies took on the No. 6 seed, Fargo South for the second time in a week.

The Huskies had won earlier in the week, and showed incredible determination as they overcame a loss in the first set to beat South, 19-25, 25-13, 15-13 to become the consolation champions for the tournament.

For the tournament, Brandi Matejcek and Whitney Klosterman led the Huskies in kills with 15 and 12 respectively.

Klosterman also led in blocks, with five.

Leandra Schmidt led the Huskies in assists with 11.

Klosterman and Megan DeVillers led in digs with 28 and 27, respectively.

Wahpeton totaled 35 aces for the tournament, with Shelby Reiff leading the team with 10.
