Richels named to All-State team

Wahpeton swimmer Kelsey Richels finished second in her two individual events when the North Dakota state swim meet wrapped up Saturday in Grand Forks.

Richels finished behind Minot swimmer Dagney Knutson in the 100 Freestyle.

Knutson set two national high school record in Friday's preliminaries.

In the 200 Freestyle, Ali Church from Grand Forks Central edged Richels by .84 of a second for the title.

"Overall, the team had a good weekend," head coach Anne Retzlaff said. "Every swimmer either saw a personal best time or a season best time."

The Huskies finished 12th out of 13 teams at the meet.

Richels swam personal best times by at least 2 seconds in both swims.

Carissa Buckholz swam a season best time in the 100 Breaststroke in preliminary heats Friday and finished eighth overall in the Saturday finals.

Brittney Braun was .06 short of her personal best time in the 50 Freestyle from the EDC meet, Nov. 7, but put up a personal best in the 100 Butterfly.

Heather Stach improved her Breaststroke time by over 2 seconds and Toree Schulte picked up a season best time on her swim too.

Preliminary (Friday) results:

Kelsey Richels:

200 Free 1:54.25 All State 1st team time and tie for 2nd going into finals

100 Free 52.83 All State 1st team time and 2nd place going into finals

Carissa Buckholz:

100 Breast 1:11.28 8th place; advance to finals.

Brittney Braun:

50 Free, 28.09, 40th place.

100 Fly, 1:10.88, 31st place.

Heather Stach:

100 Breast, 1:16.59, 23rd.

Toree Schulte:

100 Breast, 1:18.42, 26th.

Finals (Saturday) Results:

Kelsey Richels:

200 Free 1:52.92 All State 1st team time, 2nd.

100 Free 52.55 All State 1st team time 2nd.

Carissa Bucholz:

100 Breast, 1:12.97, 8th.

Relay Results:

200 Medley: Makyl Ziegler, Carissa Bucholz, Brittney Braun, Heather Stach 2:05.87, 13th.

200 Free: Carissa Bucholz, Rachel Antrim, Toree Schulte, Kelsey RIchels 1:51.63 11th.

400 Free, Kelsey Richels, Brittney Braun, Toree Schulte, Heather Stach 4:02.94 11th.

    " Easily the mosst accomplished swimmer to come out of Wahpeton. If it wasn't for Dagny Knutson, Kelsey could have been the top senior to come out of North Dakota this year. She'll be swimming Division I somewhere next year. Congrats on a great High School career!! "
