Authorities said Paul Sambursky and Kerry Garnett tried to escape in July by bending a bar in their cell window but turned themselves in after the attempt failed. Two others were accused of helping them.
Sambursky, who is serving 30 years for sexual assaults around the University of North Dakota, pleaded not guilty this week to charges of escape, conspiracy to commit escape and escape paraphernalia. The last charge involves items used in an escape.

Kerry Garnett, who is serving a life sentence for murder, made his first appearance from Wyoming via television, on charges of escape, conspiracy and escape paraphernalia . Feland said a preliminary hearing is pending for another inmate, Michael Weiland, who is accused of acting as a lookout.
