Teachers say thanks by making holiday meal

Breckenridge teachers who want to give back to their community have started a new Thanksgiving initiative.

At the start of the school year, Stacy Busta, union president and coordinator, asked teachers if they wanted to sponsor a feast for a needy family. Inspired to act after attending a summer education conference, she felt Breckenridge teachers could follow a path similar to other unions by doing service work.

Word spread quickly throughout the school after conference time, and about a dozen teachers agreed to participate in the event.

"A lot of our members volunteer through 4-H or their church, but we kind of felt as a union, we could be doing something, too," she said.

Teachers will not only provide one family with a full Thanksgiving meal next Wednesday - turkey, potatoes, cranberries and the like - but they will also supply another with Jubilee gift cards. Some teachers will serve the Thanksgiving meal at Inspiration Lutheran Church, Breckenridge, while others, like Busta and her husband, plan to deliver meals to families that day.

Teams of three and four people will split the work, which has been orchestrated to fit around their schedules.

Lori Randall, kindergarten teacher, said they usually focus on doing what's best for the children, but this opportunity provides a little something else.

"It's kind of nice to come forward and make our association known... that we're also here in other ways outside of the school," she said.

Many teachers simply wanted to engage in the true holiday spirit.

"Families and parents support the school so much, and give so much to us, that we just felt like we wanted to start being able to give back," Busta said.
