Honor veterans all year round

After watching some of the History Channel’s “World War II in HD” program that started airing last Sunday, I have a new found respect for veterans. The program features real footage from WWII battles, a lot of which has never been seen before.

It is easy to see that these soldiers went through hell and beyond.

While watching the show I cannot help think of veterans like Lesley Aldrich of Breckenridge. It was fascinating to read about his experience fighting at Guadalcanal and with Merrill’s Marauders during WWII in the Nov. 15 Daily News.

Watching and reading about these experiences brings back childhood memories I have of being at my grandparent’s house in South Dakota. My great-uncle Adam was visiting and for some reason they were talking about WWII.

I remember sitting at the table listening to him talk about being in France fighting the Germans. Adam said one time he and four of his brothers were united for a couple of days.

His brothers were all enlisted in different units of the military so getting them together in France was nothing short of a miracle.

I can only imagine that his experiences were similar to Mr. Aldrich’s and what I am seeing on the History Channel. I did not realize at the time that I was listening to living history and now only wish I could go back in time to listen to my great-uncle Adam recount his stories of WWII. It’s too late now, since he died years ago.

My point is that every veteran has a story to tell and they are literally time capsules in the flesh. We should not glorify war, however, we should remember the price that was paid for our freedom.

I know Veterans Day this year has already passed, but there can never be enough parades, praise, waves, handshakes and smiles to properly thank our nation's veterans for their service and sacrifice.

We should continue to honor them with these for the rest of their days.
