The sophomore, junior and senior class collected cell phones for soldiers, non-perishable food items for the Richland-Wilkin Food Pantry and put money toward a scholarship in memory of Annie Gjesdal, a 2008 graduate.
Kristi Mahrer, high school English teacher and co-organizer of American Education Week, said the student body collected 136 cell phones for soldiers. The money received for selling the phones goes toward cell minutes for soldiers.

The students will also be donating 2,509 items to the local food pantry, an amount that's increased considerably since Wahpeton students began celebrating American Education Week three years ago. Sophomores, juniors and seniors collected only 208 items for the drive in 2007.
A scholarship in memory of Gjesdal, who died in a car crash in September, now holds $968.
"With a lot of the students, it was just their own money they donated," Mahrer said.
In 2007 and 2008, students collected money to donate to the March of Dimes.
