In the final match of the state girls volleyball tournament, the Wyndmere-Lidgerwood Warbirds had a consolation championship trophy in sight.

They lost the first game of the final match to Park River-Fordville-Lankin 25-19. Sydney Larson, Lexi Erickson and Cass Heigaard were forcing the Warbirds all over the court.

The defensive match up favored the Aggies, so W-L head coach Chris Swenson changed his rotation and tried something different. That something included putting Carlyssa Quam, a junior hitter, into the mix. Quam gave the Warbirds the spark they needed and the girls went to work in the second game.

W-L won the second and third game with safe margins, 25-21, 25-16. Now only one game stood between them and fifth place.

After gaining a lead in the fourth game, the Aggies turned it on again behind the powerful hitting of Erickson and Heigaard. The Warbirds were out of position on the final few points and the Aggies made it two games apiece after winning the fourth 25-23.

Coach Swenson told his girls to play their style of ball and hit some powerful spikes of their own. Moriah Skroch, Nicole Mauch, Nicole Hulm and Jenni Wettstein swung their arms for big hits. Hulm was a force at the net and the Warbirds jumped to a slim lead.

Wettstein received the set for the final hit and found the floor for a 15-12 win. The Warbirds sent their first team to the state tournament in their first year as a co-op. They won fifth place and were pleased with their efforts.

“These girls should be proud of what they accomplished this year,” Swenson said. “They had an outstanding season and ended with a win.”
