Do you look forward to the holidays? Which holiday is your favorite?

There are people who “dread the holidays” for a variety of reasons, including the cost and the preparation, and work involved.

Every family has difficulties but the holiday season encourages families to come together to celebrate.

Research from the Search Institute shows families that celebrate holidays are more likely to raise kids who have a strong sense of identity, feel they belong, are healthy, have close ties to family members and succeed in school.

The holidays give parents the opportunity to spend quality time with their children, even if it is not storybook perfect. It is a time for parents to talk to their kids about the dangers of alcohol and model responsible drinking behavior associated with celebrations.

Also, talk to your children about family traditions.

Some traditions may have been handed down from generation to generation.

These traditions provide children with a sense of who they are, where they come from, a feeling of belonging and support.

There is concern that busy lifestyles, changing family structures and geographic distances will cause families to stop getting together and carrying on their family traditions and rituals.

Traditions and rituals are road maps that give children a sense of predictability and safety. There is a cartoon that shows Dennis the Menace walking with his friends at Christmas time. Dennis said, “I’m always good at this time of year. It’s tradition.”

Traditions do not need to be difficult or stressful.

Think about what your family likes and how it has worked in the past and what could be improved.

Involve all family members in the discussion and the preparation, including your children. It is important to spend positive time together.

Every family has difficulties, but you are still family. Celebrations and traditions give your family security and joy. Celebrate responsibly.
