William Medenwald, 80, Breckenridge, Minn., formerly of Hankinson, N.D., died Sunday, Jan. 31, 2010, at St. Francis Nursing Home, Breckenridge.

A memorial service will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 4 at Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Hankinson with the Revs. Teresa Heupel and Mark Manning officiating.

There will be a gathering of friends one hour prior to the service at the church.

Burial will be in United Cemetery, Hankinson.

Organist will be Paul Buckhaus and special music will be sung by Jackie Medenwald.

William Herman Medenwald was born March 20, 1929, at rural Hankinson, the son of Willie and Bertha (Heesch) Medenwald. He grew up on the farm and attended country schools. He graduated from Hankinson High School. He farmed with his father and on June 16, 1950, he was united in marriage with Lois Swanson at St. Joseph Lutheran Church in Rosholt, S.D. In 1953 they moved into Hankinson, where he worked various jobs. He worked for the city of Hankinson as water commissioner until 1982 when he retired due to his health. When Lois died Nov. 30, 1997, he continued to live in Hankinson and worked part time for the city, in charge of waste management until the fall of 2004. He then moved to Breckenridge, where he has lived since.

William was a life member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ and the Hankinson Fire Department.

He is survived by: two sons, Larry (Jackie) Medenwald of Wahpeton, N.D., Randy (Mary) Medenwald of Mandan, N.D.; three daughters, Vickie (Gary) Youngquist of Breckenridge, Beverly Medenwald of Salt Lake City, Utah, Jackie (Mike) Mertes of Breckenridge; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by: his parents, Willie and Bertha Medenwald; his wife, Lois Medenwald; sisters, Darlene and Ardell.

Frank Family Funeral Home of Hankinson is in charge of the funeral arrangements.
