A carbon monoxide detector is one item many do not think to keep in their homes. It is just as important as a smoke detector.
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 170 people die from non-automotive carbon monoxide poisoning each year. Whether it’s a malfunctioning furnace or charcoal burned in a stove, the gas can really harm people and pets.

However, slow leaks allow longer periods for people to recognize symptoms, which include: headache, fatigue, shortness of breath, nausea and dizziness. Symptoms of high poisoning include mental confusion, vomiting, loss of muscular coordination and loss of consciousness.
To prevent poisoning, use basic common sense — have appliances installed to manufacturer's standards, don't operate gas-powered generators near or in enclosed spaces, and leave your car running outside your garage, to name a few.
Carbon monoxide detectors can be a minimal purchase. However, they can cost up to $60 or more, depending on how fancy a detector you want. Some detect just carbon monoxide, others can detect explosive gases as well, and you can buy them with two or more in a pack.
There is a detector available that alerts to natural, methane, propane and carbon monoxide. Many detectors are battery operated and others plug in with a battery backup. So there are plenty of choices.
For you and your families' safety, look into getting a carbon monoxide detector. It should be just as common as making sure your smoke detector is working.
