Breckenridge junior guard Amber Vold led all scorers with 21 points Monday night.

But Vold's effort was not enough to propel the Cowgirls past the Benson, Minn., Braves, who downed Breckenridge 75-55.

"Their height and their athleticism got the better of us," Cowgirls head coach Sue Smith said. "But we had a couple of spurts where we cut their lead to six or so. We didn't do a good job of transitioning on defense. It's something we'll have to address in practice."

The Braves started the game with a 6-0 run. Junior forward Sierra Steckler scored the Cowgirls' first points with a basket at 14:30 of the first half.

With Benson leading 9-2, Vold hit a 3-point shot to cut into the Braves' lead.

Later in the first half, senior guard Kacey Herder and senior center Baylee Wilson hit two free throws and a basket, respectively, for the Cowgirls to keep Breckenridge to within seven points of the Braves.

But Benson hit three 3-point shots late in the half as the Braves built a 37-27 halftime lead.

In the second half, Vold started the Cowgirls by hitting a 3-point shot and cutting the Braves' lead back to seven points.

But Benson went on a 12-0 run after that and broke the game open.

Breckenridge junior guard Mary Wermerskirchen hit a 3-point shot to break the Benson streak, but the Braves had a 19-point lead prior to her shot.

The Braves built their lead to as many as 28 points in the second half using a strong pressure defense and getting Cowgirls' turnovers by trapping the ball.

Near the end of the game, Benson substituted their reserves into the game.

The Cowgirls also used the opportunity to get some of their reserves into the game.

The Cowgirls closed the game with a 9-2 run to narrow the gap.

Sophomore forward Hannah Mergens scored for Breckenridge, along with Vold, Baylee Wilson and Steckler in the closing run.

The Cowgirls travel to Ulen-Hitterdahl for their next game Friday.
