Local youth will be smiling brighter after Feb. 19 thanks to a free dental care service provided by North Dakota dental professionals.

The second annual Give Kids a Smile is targeting cleanings, fluoride treatments and other dental work to families nationwide who have limited financial resources.

At the local event held at North Dakota State College of Science, dentists such as Dr. Judith Schmidt, Wahpeton, and Dr. Lana Schlecht from Ellendale, N.D., will be available. After the initial screening, some patients may be referred to Dr. Ken Weidman's office in Breckenridge.

Dentists cared for nearly 50 children last year, providing more than $11,000 worth of services. Although the need exceeded the service capability, they unfortunately do not have a follow-up system to provide more care, said Dr. Susan Swanson, director of the Allied Dental Educational Department at NDSCS.

"It's a little limiting, but we know we made a difference," she said.

As 52 dental hygiene students and faculty will work alongside the dentists here, the day also provides a different kind of education, she said.

"Not only is it a good thing for the patients that we treat, I think we're educating students on the importance of being a volunteer," she said. "Hopefully, it's a lifelong skill."

According to the American Dental Association, children should see a dentist no later than their first birthday. If a child gets tooth decay, the untreated disease can lead to eating and sleeping difficulties.

The clinic, held at the Mayme Green Allied Health Center at NDSCS, will treat individuals ranging from 3 years old to 20. Clinic hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Residents must call 1-800-342-4325 ext. 2333 or 701-671-2333 to make an appointment in advance. Patients younger than 18 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
