On Jan. 5, Colette Barton, executive director of the Richland Wilkin United Way, spoke to Wahpeton Rotary about the 2009-2010 campaign. A current total for the campaign was not available but progress is being made toward the goal of $281,000. Highlights during the local United Way year included: 125 people who volunteered to help others on the Day of Caring; filling and distributing backpacks of school supplies, the campaign theme of "Live United" and the establishment of an emergency response fund to help individuals or families when the need arises.
The United Way is operated through volunteer members who serve on the board and two staff (one of whom is Colette herself). The funds raised locally are primarily used to meet local needs and an annual audit is done to ensure funds are accounted for.
Since the double-decker bus is nearing completion, a "stuff the bus" with backpacks filled with school supplies in 2010 was proposed. Community response is vital to the success of the United Way. Carmen Plummer and Merlin Beto, Wahpeton Rotary Club members, serve on the board of the United Way.
Beside the program on the United Way, Wahpeton Rotary Club members learned the Japanese Group Study Exchange members will visit Wahpeton and Breckenridge on Tuesday, May 11.
