On Jan. 26, the American Library Association (ALA) announced the 2010 winners of the Newbery and Caldecott medals. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children, a division of the ALA, to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. The Caldecott Medal is also awarded annually by the Association for Library Service to Children to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.

The Newbery Medal was first awarded in 1922, becoming the first children's book award in the world. The 2010 winner is Rebecca Stead for her book “When You Reach Me.”

This is written especially for students in grades six through eight and is the story of a 12-year-old girl named Miranda living in New York City in the late 1970s. According to the ALA Web site, “Miranda encounters shifting friendships, a sudden punch, a strange homeless man and mysterious notes that hint at knowledge of the future.”

The Caldecott Medal was first awarded in 1938. The 2010 winner is author/illustrator Jerry Pinkney for the book “The Lion and the Mouse.”

This is a picture book written and illustrated for children from preschool through third grade. According to the ALA Web site, “The screech of an owl, the squeak of a mouse and the roar of a lion transport readers to the Serengeti plains for this virtually wordless retelling of Aesop’s classic fable.”
