In light of the January earthquake in Haiti, two Wahpeton natives, Charlie and Melissa (Reimche) Broberg will be in Wahpeton Friday, Feb. 12 at Faith Church on 11th Street North to speak about adoption. The couple lives in Britton, S.D. Their pastor and his wife, Kevin and Annette Koop, will also speak. The event is a Valentine banquet fundraiser for youth at Faith Church.

The Brobergs recently adopted a little girl from Haiti named Daphnee. Charlie and Melissa decided to adopt five years ago after trying to get pregnant for 10 years. Ten months after domestically adopting their son, Moses, the couple found they were going to be biological parents.

"We didn't even believe it until we heard the heartbeat," Melissa said. "The doctor said, 'You're going to hear the heartbeat today, so you can no longer deny it.'"

Now the couple had two sons, Moses and Jonah, but felt they could do more and looked into adopting from a foreign country.

In July 2009, Daphnee became seriously ill so she came to the U.S. early on a medical visa. She has bilateral club feet, but if she hadn't received proper medical attention soon, she would have died, Melissa said.

The Brobergs picked her up in Denver and took her to Sioux Falls, S.D., for surgery.

She was bound by casts for several weeks, but now wears braces on her legs with a bar fastened to her feet to keep them from turning inward.

Club feet happens when a baby's ligaments are not fully formed because the mother is malnourished during pregnancy. The bar and braces will help correct the position of her feet.

"She's not walking yet," Melissa said. "Orphanage babies are generally delayed because there's not a lot of one-on-one time. There are 20 workers and 80 babies."

Although it has been a struggle caring for Daphnee, the Brobergs wouldn't change the situation. They enjoy every minute they have with her and love sharing their story.

Tickets for the fundraiser must be purchased by Tuesday, Feb. 9 by contacting Pastor Dan at 701-429-3919. The meal will be prepared and served by the Faith Church youth.
