Wahpeton pins Devils Lake, 57-24

Wahpeton secured the No. 3 seed from the EDC in the North Dakota state dual wrestling tournament with a 57-24 win over Devils Lake Saturday.

Huskies head coach Kelly McNary said, "We're happy to be back there. That's always one of our goals.I thought we were very aggressive today and we wrestled well after running into a tough team last night."

On Friday, the Huskies traveled to West Fargo for a dual against the Packers.

West Fargo downed Wahpeton 50-21.

In that dual, seniors Kyle Iverson, Pat Rollins and Eric Christianson, along with junior Dillon Solberg and freshman Cody Hickel got wins as the Packers picked up four falls and remained unbeaten on the season.

In Saturday's dual with the Firebirds, Wahpeton fell behind 12-0 after a Devils Lake pin at 103 and a Huskies open weight at 112.

After the Huskies picked up one of four open Firebirds weights at 119, senior Tyler Mauch pinned his opponent in 1:36 at 125 pounds to tie the dual at 12.

Seniors Dan Tipping and Danny Gordon got pins at 135 and 140, respectively and the Huskies were ahead 30-12 in team points.

Christianson won a tough 2-0 decision at 152, while junior Sam Weisz pinned his opponent at 171 to extend the Huskies lead to 45-18.

Iverson closed out the dual with a pin in 50 seconds at 285 pounds to give the Huskies the win.

Wahpeton will participate in the East region individual wrestling tournament Saturday at Fargo-North.

The state team tournament will be in Fargo at the Fargodome starting Thursday, Feb. 18.
