Sixty area students have qualified for up to $6,000 a piece after taking a job skills assessment that covers reading, math and locating information. The scholarship requires students take five credits of career and technological education classes at college and maintain their GPA. The final deadline for the assessment test, called ACT WorkKeys, is Feb. 6.
Dan Rood, director of Southeast Region Career and Technology Center, Wahpeton, said the number of students who qualified is "awesome." He said they've crushed his initial belief of hitting a quarter million in aid.

As one of six testing sites in North Dakota, the center provided easy access for students who otherwise would have to travel, said Rood. By being able to proctor the exam at their home schools, the level of participation gave way to great success, he added.
"It really paid to weigh in on, as far as making it available for our kids," he said. "I think it will help younger students see that there's opportunities for them."
