Cowgirls split weekend games

The Breckenridge Cowgirls got a win Saturday night over the Moorhead, Minn., Park Christian Falcons, 62-54. The win came one night after losing to Wheaton-Herman-Norcross.

"We played good transition offense and had a great first half," Cowgirls head coach Sue Smith said. "We got a good game from Jordan Reiff with a double-double. Chloe Bergman and Ariel Running Bear played great defense against their best player."

Amber Vold led the Cowgirls with 27 points on the night.

Reiff finished the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Cowgirls' sophomore forward Sierra Steckler scored the first two points of the game.

Breckenridge sophomore guard Amber Vold hit six points early in the game, as the Cowgirls built a 8-4 lead.

After the Falcons got as close as three points after a free throw, the Cowgirls 11-0 run.

Senior center Jordan Reiff, junior guard Ariel Running bear, Vold and Steckler scored in the run, as the Cowgirls built a 14-point lead.

Breckenridge senior guard Alisha Goodijohn and junior forward Kelsey Dahlgren added to the scoring for the Cowgirls in the first half and Breckenridge led 35-24 at halftime.

In the second half, Vold and Reiff extended the Breckenridge lead to 15 points.

But the Falcons slowly inched their way back into the game. They cut the Cowgirls' lead to seven points, with seven minutes left to play.

With 1:08 left in the game, the Cowgirls' lead was just six points.

But Vold and Running Bear hit important free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

On Friday, the Cowgirls hosted Wheaton-Herman-Norcross. The Warriors used a 14-2 run early in the game and went home with a 59-45 win on senior night at Breckenridge High School.

Senior guard Breann Larson scored the first two points of the game and the Cowgirls had a quick lead.

Senior guard Alisha Goodijohn and senior center Jordan Reiff also scored early as the Cowgirls built a 8-2 lead.

But the Warriors hit their stride after that, and the 14-2 run gave them the lead and a 26-15 advantage at halftime.

The Warriors led by as many as 19 points in the second half, before the Cowgirls scored the final seven points of the game to narrow the gap.

The Cowgirls begin section play Thursday.
