Women in the Twin Towns have joined to form the MOMs Connection, a group that will provide free events for moms and families.

"We wanted to help local people," said Eileen Mislan, a coordinator. "Our own people are suffering right now. Our families need support. We hope to draw on talent locally to help."

One of the first events the group will hold is a soup-making class at St. John's Church in Wahpeton on March 20 at 10 a.m. There will be a limit of 10 people in the class, so pre-registration is a must by calling 643-2416.

"So many young people don't have time or money to cook," Mislan said. "These are meals you can just pop in the freezer."

"Everybody's so busy, so this is just to spoil them a little bit," said Michelle Fehr, a coordinator.

This is a way to provide information for those operating on a tight budget. Mislan said the group has encouraged other churches in the area to offer the same class. Each person who attends will get to take home a container of soup.

One of the four major events the group will hold this year is Women's Wellness on March 22. From 4-6 p.m., those who attend the event will hear from Cheri Berge, a nurse practitioner at MeritCare Clinic in Wahpeton, Mary Wolfgram, clinic coordinator at North Dakota State College of Science, and Tim Peterson, director of rehabilitation services at St. Francis Healthcare Campus.

To make the events more accessible for busy moms or families to attend, the group has arranged for free childcare. While the adults learn more about healthcare in the Red River Valley Room, the children can play in the Medora Room, both in the student center.

Each presenter will give 20 minute talks and there will be a period for questions.

"You can come to one session if you don't have (a lot of) time," Fehr said.

To keep women's emotional and spiritual health high along with physical health, the MOMs Connection is working to hold a mini women's retreat in June, which includes lunch.

"It's a chance to take a deep breath," Mislan said.

In September and October, the group will hold a seminar called, "How not to Marry a Jerk or Jerkette." And in October, they will host a seminar called "Finances in Challenging Times."
