At a Wilkin County Alcohol Tobacco and Other Drugs coalition meeting Thursday, Stephanie Miranowski, member, said the fair board has unanimously agreed to the idea. At this point, smokers will be able to congregate in the beer garden and areas surrounding carnival worker trailers. Additional designated spots may be established after she examines other fair polices, she said.
Miranowski, also a fair board member, is writing a policy on the change after she consults with ATOD.

Addyson Diaz, a youth member of ATOD and 4-H, is also contributing to the policy. She's been a strong supporter of the change and has expressed that she wants the fair as smoke-free as possible.
Diaz said she was always raised to believe smoking is a bad habit, and students are repeatedly advised about its ill affects on their health.
"I think it's great because (the fair board is) thinking of the health of people that are going to the fair," she said later. "I think this is a good start to what potentially could grow to be something bigger."
After the duo finish writing the policy, it will go to the fair board for approval at its next meeting.
