GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Grand Forks public health officials are cracking down on tattoo artists who operate out of unlicensed home or apartment parlors.

Officials say the "privateers" undercut the business of the city's four licensed tattoo operations and risk the spread of hepatitis and other diseases.

Environmental health sanitarian Jim Schothorst says an illegal operation was shut down Tuesday but that there could be half a dozen or more still operating.

Officials say the residential tattoo operations often fail to meet health standards and also attract people younger than 18 who by law can't get a tattoo without parental permission.
