A July 16 benefit is planned in Tintah, Minn., for a baby who will soon receive open heart surgery.
Three-month-old Jayme Swenson was diagnosed with a hole in her heart and a paralyzed vocal chord at birth, said Karen Albert, grandmother. After she turned 1 month old, her parents rushed her to the emergency room because of breathing problems. Two days later, doctors discovered the hole in Jayme's heart and her lungs were completely filled with fluid.

At the time, her heart rate was more than 200 beats per minute. A calm baby's heart rate should be around 120, while the rate of one crying uncontrollably can spike to 160, said Albert.
Since birth, Jayme has had three surgeries and uses a permanent feeding tube. She's also undergone a tracheotomy because of her continued breathing problems. Her open heart surgery is scheduled for July 9.
The experience has been “tough” on the baby's 20-year-old parents, Nate Swenson and Lindsay Albert. Swenson works part time while he attends college in the Twin Cities and Albert can't work because the baby requires 24-hour care, said her grandmother.
The benefit includes a 4-7 p.m. barbecue pork dinner at St. Gall's Church in Tintah. A live and silent auction will be held at Tintah Fire Hall afterward. Donations can be sent to Lindsay Albert at State Bank & Trust, Attn: Linda Knudson, 128 West Cavour Ave., Fergus Falls, Minn., 56537.
