A group of 10 area girls basketball players traveled with coach Mark Wisnewskli to the Kamehameha summer basketball tournament in Oahu, Hawaii.

The team, comprised of girls from North Dakota and South Dakota breezed through the competition and won all of their games easily.

"Two years ago when we won it, we had to scratch and claw and won several games down the stretch," coach Wisnewski said. "Except for about six minutes of our final game most of our coaching was done in practice in North Dakota. We just simply dominated from the opening tap and never looked back."

The team consisted of Sierra Rosenau, Emily Thompson and Becca Scherr of Carrington, Mara Pankow of Hankinson, Paige Tompkins of Milnor, Mackenzie Hamre of Enderlin, Riley Peterson of North Sargent, Olivia Johnson of Richland, Shelby Krueger of Hope-Page-Finley-Sharon and Conner Anderson of Rosholt, S.D.

In their first game of the tournament, team North Dakota defeated Kamehameha, 65-33.

Krueger led the way for North Dakota with 14 points, while Anderson had 13.

Then North Dakota defeated Oklahoma Select, 61-31. All ten girls scored in that game, with Krueger, Johnson and Thompson each scoring eight points to lead the North Dakota scorers.

On the second day of pool play, team North Dakota kept winning by beating Gulf Coast, a team with players from Mississippi and Georgia, 70-36.

Peterson and Krueger each scored 11 points to lead the way.

Finally, the local girls downed the Oahu All-Stars 52-41 to finish off their undefeated run in the tournament.

Team North Dakota used a 16-4 run in the final minutes to pull out the win.

Johnson had 11 points to lead team North Dakota, while Hamre added nine.

This marks the second time Lidgerwood athletic director and team North Dakota coach Mark Wisnewski has taken a team to the Hawaii and gone unbeaten. The first time was in 2008.

"They really bought into what we worked on in practice," Wisnewski said about his team. "We also drew raves from the Tournament committee in not only how well we played... but in how classy our girls were."
