19 low-performing Minn. schools to split $24.5M

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The state will divide nearly $24.5 million in grants among 19 of the state's lowest-performing schools in an effort to turn them around starting this fall.

The Minnesota Department of Education announced Thursday how it would spend it's share of the federal School Improvement Grant funds.

The 19 schools are required to use the money to make dramatic changes by September, including adding an hour of instruction time by day, hiring a new assistant principal and hiring an administrator to oversee turnaround efforts.

Seven low-performing schools applied for the grants but didn't get them because the department determined they weren't capable of making all the required changes by this fall. They can reapply next year.

The largest grant is $1.9 million for Edison Senior High in Minneapolis.

Not the ones who talk about how simple minded students should test differantly than those students who learn a normal pace....more time needs to be spent on educating our young people, giving them creative outlets and less on sports....
