The Wahpeton boys tennis team continues its search for points in a 9-0 loss to Red River on Thursday.

“We played the best team in the state today and they came out swinging. I think our kids showed a lot of heart and stroked the ball with no fear,” coach Kyle Christianson said. “They played hard every point and didn't give up even when they were down. It showed what a good group of kids we have going out against the defending state champs and working hard every point.”

For the second-straight match, Michael Withuski was held out of the lineup with an arm injury, but is still expected to return soon.

Wahpeton has opened its season with some of the toughest competition in the conference, a point not lost on Christianson.

“We have played three of the top teams in the state right away in Fargo South, Grand Forks Central, and Grand Forks Red River,” he said. “They’re tough competition and our ability to learn from every match will help us improve every day. If the kids continue to battle every match, say focused in practice, and learn from every hitting session this year will turn around quickly.

“We are close to climbing a major cliff in our tennis games and I look forward to the rest of the season.”

The team next plays a group of exhibition matches against Jamestown and Fargo South on Saturday.
