The New York Kammermusiker, a double-reed classical music ensemble, will visit Wahpeton as part of their fourth annual "Winds of Change Festival" world tour. They will perform at the North Dakota State College of Science Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 6:30 p.m.

The quartet includes Jeffrey Hale, oboe; John Frisch, oboe and English horn; Leonard Hindell, bassoon; and Ilonna Pederson, founder and group director, English horn.

The group has been to North Dakota on four different occasions, visiting Fargo and its neighboring cities last year, but this will be its first visit to the Wahpeton area. Pederson is a native of North Dakota, hailing from farming areas near Rolette.

"That's why she has an alliance with the state and an interest in bringing these professional musicians to the state, so North Dakota folks can benefit from them, too," said event coordinator Wayne Beyer, Wahpeton Parks and Recreation director.

In addition to performing at the college, the group will be doing some outreach in the community. The musicians will be visiting Wahpeton Middle School's music students in the afternoon.

Tuesday evening, the quartet will be playing an all Baroque period revue. The program will include pieces by composers Joseph Bodin de Boismortier, Henry Purcell and George Frideric Handel.

"I think it's a great opportunity," Beyer said. "It's not that often we get to experience a concert with folks that can play classical music and the resumes of the folks coming are quite renowned. They're high-professional musicians, so obviously we would expect that would be a quality performance, too."

The concert will be held at the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center on the NDSCS campus. The hour-long program is free to the public, though there will be a free will offering that will benefit the struggling Richland Wilkin Food Pantry.

"They need some help," said Beyer. "For those who are able to give something... it will benefit (the pantry) and people around the area."
