Now that school has started in the Twin Towns, Leach Public Library is gearing up for its fall programs.

First, the library's story time program, which runs Mondays at 2 p.m. and Tuesdays at 10 a.m. from Sept. 13-Dec. 13-14, is usually a 45-minute program for children ages 3-5. It features stories and finger-plays with music and crafts at the end.

"It's very fun," said Kristi Maas, program coordinator. "Some kids are used to having stories read to them. Others are not, so it's kind of a new experience for them. Some of them like to hang out with their friends, and experience it that way."

Each week, there's a different theme. Monday's story is repeated on Tuesdays, as a sort of encore performance for those children unable to attend. The first scheduled story time is "Wheels on the Bus."

More popular, though, is the library's new baby/tot story time, held Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. For this program, parents come with their children and, mainly, it is musical, Maas said.

"We may get a story or two in," she said. "A lot of music puppets, finger-plays. A lot of movement for that age. And that's their first experience to a group story time. A lot of music going on there, a lot of parents dancing with their kids, things like that. It is so much fun."

The activities, which build important reading skills, are usually packed with parents and their children, Maas said.

"We keep growing," she said. "We're not sure where we're going to go if we keep filling that room."

Also, Maas is reviving her Kids Club program for 2009, beginning Sept. 14. Here, the participating kids direct what events will happen, she said. In the past, they have done book clubs, watched videos, done crafts and decorated the library. All the time, the youth lead and decide.

Maas is especially excited about this program, which takes place from 3:30-4:30 p.m.

"It's going to be busy and fun," she said. "The checklist started yesterday. I think I've got five kids (signed up) already."

While baby/tot story time is a relatively new program, starting last winter, the rest have been going on "for a very long time," Maas said.

She teased that there will be a special guest author featured in October, adding, "Look for more information closer to that date."

All of the activities are held in the library's activities room on the lower level. Information on each of the programs is available at the library.
