The Wahpeton boys tennis team captured their first win of the season on the road Saturday with a 5-4 result over Jamestown.

The match began with singles play, and after some intense competition, it was tied 3-3 with only doubles play to go.

“All of our singles players played well,” said coach Kyle Christianson. “Carson Miller played a very smart game. Tim (Lukens) battled and fought his way to a third set. Eric (Christensen) showed he has all the shots being in control of most of the points during the match.

The coach also praised the consistent play of Colby Youngquist.

“Colby had his closest match of the year, and I feel he has really moved forward in his game,” he said.

No. 1 and No. 3 doubles split their matches, putting all the pressure on the No. 2 team of Johnson and Anderson. After taking the first set, they dropped the second, and were in real danger of losing the third. Down 5-1 in the in final set, they battled back fiercely and took an impressive tiebreaker win to seal the victory for Wahpeton.

After the match, coach Christianson was quick to point out how impressed he was with the play of Johnson and Anderson.

“They could have easily given up at 5-1,” Christianson said. “Both players had their serves broken, Jamestown was serving to win the match, and they had all the momentum, but Dylan and Luke never gave up on any point, even diving after a couple of balls to keep the point going.”

The Huskies continue with their next match Tuesday at Valley City.
