Law enforcement trains for active shooters at NDSCS

At least 60 law enforcement officers from Wahpeton, the North Dakota State College of Science, Richland County, Moorhead, Minn., Brooklyn Park, Minn., St. Louis County, Minn., Jamestown and Lisbon took part in active shooter training at the college Monday.

During the multi-day training, officers learn through both classroom and hands-on how law enforcement training has been affected by incidents like the shootings at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., and Red Lake Falls, Minn.

‘It’s another method of response to active shooters,’ said Lt. Aaron Berg, NDSCS. ‘It’s designed for the average responding officer.’

Before this type of training was available, local law enforcement would have to call in a SWAT team to take care of the situation, Berg said. Now, with teams like the one from Texas that came to do the training in Wahpeton-Breckenridge, local officers are able to take action in an immediately dangerous situation.
