Award-winning musician and storyteller Bryan Akipa performed “Dakota War Dances and Love Songs” Thursday night to an audience of about 250 people at the Harry Stern and Ella Stern Cultural Center at North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. His music is a blend of old traditions and contemporary songs.

The performance was part of a day-long celebration of Native American Heritage Day, sponsored by an Our Town grant.

Akipa, a member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Sioux Tribe and veteran of the U.S. Army, performed songs on various handmade cedar flutes he’s crafted. In his artist statement, he describes his instruments as designed in the Northern Plains style and are meant to be danced with, held or played.
