Sixth grade students at Breckenridge Elementary School are busy making Christmas cards to send to American troops stationed overseas.

The classes recently had an assignment where they learned to draw a comic from a comic strip, and their new illustration skills are being put to good use.

Teacher Matt Diaz, who is coordinating the cards project, said the idea came from a woman in Hankinson, where residents are doing the same thing.

“It’s a good way to develop our art skills and help out the troops,” he said. “I told them this means more than just printing something from the computer.”

Wednesday morning, Christmas music played in Diaz’s class while students were hard at work creating festive designs.

“It’s fun to see the giving side, and it’s not too early to start, even though it’s October,” Diaz said. “They’re excited about it and it’s one of the assignments where everybody is on task.”

Each student is making three cards, and the cards need to be completed by Oct. 15.
