FRIDAY FREEZE.  Today begins the preface to a very cold stretch headed our way after the weekend, and while temps will be chilly over the next 72 hours, they’ll pale in comparison to what’s coming next week.  We’ve got more on the dip into the deep freeze, some migratory bird protections and a missed eclipse for our area of the world in today’s Outdoors Roundup.

OUTDOORS ROUNDUP:

ON WATCH.  The National Wildlife Federation reports that the Migratory Bird Protection Act, introduced recently for congressional consideration, looks to patch up holes a recent interpretation by the executive branch shot in the Migratory Bird Treaty Act regarding incidental take – or deaths – caused by certain operations such as wind towers.  The MBPA requires best management practices to be in place to prevent as much incidental take as possible.

5 DAYS UNDER.  The Long Range Meteostar forecast shows much of next week with highs and lows at or below zero with a tooth-chattering -26 on Tuesday night and -27 on Wednesday. Get those heavy coveralls on and stay warm, the ice will be thickening quickly!

WOLF MOON.  January’s full moon – known as the wolf moon – will be unique in that it will be eclipsed by the outer edge of earth’s shadow, giving it a slight brownish hue.  Unfortunately the eclipse occurs in the middle of the day for North America, meaning by the time the sun sets the event will have ended.
