2 Things to Know Today

1. Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources is taking emergency action to try to stop the spread of chronic wasting disease in the state’s wild deer. It’s temporarily banning the movement and import of farmed white-tailed deer. The action took effect Monday, Oct. 11. The action is in response to the discovery that a CWD-positive farm in Wisconsin shipped 387 farmed white-tailed deer to farms in seven states, including Minnesota.

2. The severe thunderstorms over the weekend spawned tornadoes in the region and two touched down Saturday, Oct. 9. The National Weather Service confirmed a tornado with estimated peak winds of 100 miles per hour touched down in Park Rapids, Minnesota, at 10:30 p.m. damaging a church and car dealership. Another tornado with estimated winds of 70 miles per hour touched down briefly in a field southeast of Lidgerwood, North Dakota. There were no injuries from either tornado.
