1 U.S. Sen. Tom Carper, a Democratic Party member from Delaware, is currently the last Vietnam War veteran serving in the Senate. Carper announced Monday, May 22 that he will not seek reelection in 2024. Carper, a former Delaware governor and member of the U.S. House of Representatives, is 76. He has had a 47-year political career.

2 “Carper is the fourth Democratic senator to announce he will not seek reelection this cycle,” CNN reported. The others are Sens. Ben Cardin of Maryland, Dianne Feinstein of California and Debbie Stabenow of Michigan. Sen. Mike Braun, R-Indiana, is also not running again. The Senate is currently 51-49 favoring the Democrats and independents.
