The Twin Towns Area’s first baby of 2019, Matthew Thomas Gonzales, was welcomed into the world Friday, Jan. 4.
Gonzales was born at CHI St. Francis Health in Breckenridge, Minnesota. He is the son of Salvador Gonzales III and Delia Gonzales from Wahpeton.
“I was not due until Jan. 16,” Delia Gonzales said. “I never expected to have the New Year’s baby, that is for sure.”
Matthew Gonzales apparently had an agenda of his own when it came to when and where he was going to be born, his father explained.
“The delivery went kind of crazy because it was 3 a.m. when she started to get contractions and I was at work, so she drove herself to the hospital,” Salvador Gonzales said. “I rushed to the hospital and when I got there, we were told they didn’t have an OB (obstetrical) nurse or doctor. So, I had to drive all the way to Fergus Falls.”
After a while, the medical staff at Lake Region Healthcare in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, gave Delia Gonzales the choice to either stay there and wait to have the baby there or go back home to have the baby in Breckenridge. She was released at about 11 a.m. and went home, as she was reportedly feeling much better and only dilated to about 4-5 centimeters.
“I went back to work,” Salvador Gonzales said. “It was only about 30 minutes later and I got a call that she was having very bad contractions. So off I go again, rush home and take her to the Breckenridge hospital, where they admitted her. Within a matter of 30 minutes, she was already dilated to an eight (8 centimeters).
Matthew Gonzales was born at 7:56 p.m., weighing seven pounds and three ounces. He is 20 inches long. Gonzales has three siblings at home, a 13-year old sister and two brothers, ages 11 and 6.
The Gonzales family received a letter from Daily News Media. It includes a list of free merchandise, services, and discounts from Twin Town Area businesses for having the first baby of the year at CHI St. Francis.
