Breckenridge gutted out their first win of the American Legion baseball season on Monday, June 17. Post 53 welcomed Barnesville, Minnesota, Post 153 to town and shut them down all night, nabbing a 3-0 victory.
All three of the runs came in different innings off hits from three batters. Tommy Hiedeman plated the first run in the bottom of the fourth with a single. Tyson Piechowski kept his hot streak at the plate going with a hard RBI rip in the next inning and Hunter Feigum brought a runner home with a bloop single in the sixth.
Mitch Porter went the distance on the mound for Breck. The defense helped him out of a jam or two, but Porter was in control the whole way. He struck out a batter per inning and only gave up one free base. Porter also brought his best at the plate, banging a pair of hard hits to go along with an intentional walk.
Jake Wendorff was the bright spot in the field for Post 53. The third baseman came up with multiple crucial plays, the biggest being a smart throw home to preserve the shutout.
Breckenridge moves on to face Parkers Prairie, Minnesota, in a doubleheader on Tuesday, June 18. The first game starts at 5 p.m. There will be a Quilt of Valor presentation at 6:45 p.m. between the games.
