Avery Rugland

Avery Rugland chips his shot on the green during Wahpeton’s annual home meet on Monday, May 20.

The Huskies placed sixth at their home tournament on Monday, May 20. The team was led by two of our sophomores, Bridger Hansen and Avery Rugland.

Hansen was solid on the front nine with a one-over-par 37 and had several birdie opportunities. He also made one on six and just missed another on hole seven. Hansen had pars on holes nine-15 and had a rough stretch to end his round, but still had a good score of 77.

Rugland played solid the entire round and didn’t have a double bogey until 18 and also didn’t three-putt and that really helped his score. He has been on the cusp of breaking 80 all year and has had some very good stretches of golf.

Tucker Hermes had a very good front nine and with the exception of two holes on the back nine was solid again. Hermès had birdies on five, seven and 15 and is very confident heading into the last tournament of the regular season on Thursday. He’s been putting well and his iron play has been very good, too.

Caden Hockert showed what he’s capable of on the front nine, shooting a three-over 39. Hockert birdied seven with an excellent approach shot to 2 feet and also birdied No. 9. He’s becoming more consistent daily and the experience he’s getting will help to lower his scores. We’re working hard with him to eliminate the “blow up hole” and once he does that I’m confident he’ll be scoring in the upper 70s.

The next meet is at Rose Creek at 9 a.m. Thursday, May 23.
